Zurich is surrounded by some of Europe’s most beautiful lakes. Within one to two hours of the city center you can reach crystal-clear alpine lakes, medieval lakeside villages, and swimming spots that feel entirely removed from urban life.
Lake Zurich Upper Section (Obersee) — 45 minutes
The Upper Lake beyond Rapperswil is a hidden gem compared to the busier city shores. Take the S7 or S15 train to Rapperswil and discover the medieval old town, the hilltop castle, and the famous wooden bridge. Continue by boat to Schmerikon for lunch and return by train. Quieter and cleaner than the city sections. Best for families, cycling the full lake circuit, history enthusiasts.
Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee) — 48 minutes by train
Arguably the most dramatic lake in central Switzerland, surrounded by peaks including Pilatus and Rigi. The city of Lucerne has the famous Kapellbrücke and a beautiful old town. For swimming, the bay at Weggis on the northern shore is warm and sheltered. Take a boat to Vitznau and the historic cog railway up to Rigi Kulm (1798m) for panoramic Alpine views. Best for mountain scenery, photography, day hiking.
Lake Greifen (Greifensee) — 30 minutes
Zurich’s most accessible nature-reserve lake. No motorboats are permitted, making the water exceptionally clear. The 15km cycling circuit is one of the most popular weekend rides for Zurich families. Excellent for birdwatching — herons, grebes, and kingfishers are regular sightings. Best for cycling, birdwatching, quiet swimming.
Lake Aegeri (Ägerisee) — 60 minutes
A hidden gem in canton Zug. Warm (up to 24°C in July and August), clean, and beautifully surrounded by green hills. The Strandbad at Unterägeri has water slides, diving boards, and a restaurant. Excellent for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding with rentals on site. Best for swimming, water sports, beach days with children.
Lake Hallwil (Hallwilersee) — 55 minutes by train
One of the largest lowland lakes in Switzerland. The medieval Hallwil Castle stands on two islands in the middle of the lake and is open for guided tours. The eastern shore has several swimming areas. Best for castle visits, family swimming, history.
Pfäffikersee — 30 minutes by S-Bahn
A small, protected nature-reserve lake near Pfäffikon ZH. Pristine shoreline, excellent birdwatching, and a pleasant 10km walk around the perimeter. The Strandbad offers supervised swimming. Much quieter than larger lakes on summer weekends. Best for nature lovers, peaceful picnics, families with young children.
